The safest way is to do it manually. Every user account in XP has a seperate profile. You'll find this in the "documents and settings folder, typically in the root directory of your C drive. Open documents and settings, then your user account. Your "my documents" folder will be there. (It may be named "jim's documents" or whatever your user name is. This is the folder that contains your documents. Right-click the folder and go to "sharing and security".
There are two separate tabs of interest. Click the "sharing" tab. If the folder is being shared, un-share it. This only prevents remote access. It will not prevent another user from accessing your files while physcially at your computer.
Next click the "security" tab. There will be a list of users having access rights to your files. Make sure your user account has full control, then remove everyone else from having access. This will prevent anyone other than you from accessing your files, UNLESS they are logged on with your user account.
Next, make sure passwords are required to log on and give your account a strong password. Be sure to log off every time you leave the computer, or set the screensaver to require the computer to be unlocked before another can get access.
Finally, anyone who is an administrator of your local machine can take control and undo everything you just did. Make sure no one else has an administrative account on your computer.

You cant lock the folder itself but if you have your own "account" on the computer it will allow you to make a password for your user name. This way people can't even access your area of the computer without the password.
To add a password to your user account go into your control panel and click on user accounts. Then click on your account and a screen will pop up that says "What do you want to change about your account". There are several choices below that and one is "Create a Password". Click on that and then follow the directions.
