the first ncaa mens college basketball team to win the national championship was oregon in like 1939 or something. but if theyve only been doing the 64 team tournament for like 20 years, how did the postseason work back then?

Back in 1939 it was an 8 team tournament.
In 1951 it was increased to 16 teams.
It was steadily increased to 65 in 2001.

Basically Kentucky and Kansas invited teams to play them and the winner was the Champ... Until UCLA started paying players to play for them in the 70's then the NCAA stepped in and put a stop to that. And once when Kentucky won the championship they decided that wasn't enough so they went on to conquer the world and win the Gold at the 48 Olympics.

But Seriuosly... I believe they had a 16 team playoff format...
