I have been at my job for 3 years. First the owners found about some wrong doing from the self-proclaimed office manager, one of the owners talked to me about that the position of office manager, threatened to take work away from her . This owner would call me on the phone for about two weeks to tell me that 'this would be they day' that she would fired. Everyday I went into work walking on eggshells waiting for them to fire her and it never happened. She found out that I was in a meeting with all of owners and became very rude to me and given me the cold shoulder and called be names. Well everything cooled down for about a year. Again a year later, the same owner spoke to me about becoming office manager and asked me for a written plan. I gave him the plan and at this time he told me that they were thinking of hiring an office manager, because if this co-worker of mine were to report to me, she would quit. Well recently, they announced that she is office manager and my boss.

I don't have a back up plan to leave, I have exhausted all of vacation for the year (yes we are only in month 2). I know what I can collect unemployment, however I would to change my career (not dealing with anything like this again) but I am seasoned at what I do from on-the-job training right out of H.S. Almost 20 years experience.

That's a very tough situation. Are there other opportunities for promotion within the firm? How about using the slight as an opportunity to negotiate a big raise, "You clearly thought I was capable of serving as office manager, but now you have me reporting to a colleague of mine, perhaps to put us on more equal footing you should give me a raise" but put more politely and tailored to your circumstances. In any case, if you don't think you're going to be able to develop further here for quite a while, and do think you can develop at another firm, maybe it's time to go.

GET OUT!
I was in a similar situation and set out to get fired. (I wanted to get paid for the 5 weeks of vacation that I hadn't used). Best move I ever made.
Life is way too short to spend a huge chunk of it working for ******* that lie every time their lips move. You won't get unemployment if you quit, so have something else lined up. Sit down and write up a list of how you could use your knowledge and experience in a business that you own. In order to get anywhere in most corporations you have to be a real tool or be related to an owner or board member. Remember the only employer that won't treat you like crap is yourself.
Good Luck on whatever you decide to do.

Start looking for another position in your area. Obviously you can't trust the owners of the company and who wants to work for people they can't believe in? It's rather clear in your description of the situation that you are unhappy and honestly, who could blame you? There is no such thing as the "perfect" job but that doesn't mean you have to make yourself miserable to bring home a paycheck either. Make sure you have somewhere to go before you quit though. Most companies can respect needing to give your previous employer a two week notice and will work with you on your start date for a new job.
Good luck!!

Welcome to real life.
I would say that you should look out for yourself because no one else will. If you are ambition you will want to move up and since they promised you the job over a year ago that means you are good enough to be the office manager.
If you are unhappy keep working but look for other jobs. However, at other jobs you might have to take a bit of a dip of responsibility(investment in your career) before you can have a chance of moving up but atleast you will start fresh and you will know you can achieve your aim. Here they are just stringing you along.
Don't leave now but consider it seriously. You deserve better!

I feel for you!
Where I was from (near NYC), I could have picked up and left and found another job in a month.
If you're rural like I am now, OH FORGET IT, you're lucky to be working and not having to travel an hour and a half eating up your pay just to GET there.
SO, if you can get out feasbily, do so, because your physical and emotional health can be ruined by such stress.
If not, yoga, sunshine, and all that, and whatever other options other folks can come up with sound good.

It's obvious that you can't trust anything they tell you and they're not really interested in advancing your career, so you're in a dead-end position where you'll be used and abused. Having said that, however, my cardinal rule about leaving a job is to never leave a job unless you have something else lined up.

Yah, upper management is there to lie to you to keep you working. Now, if you reexamine the last 3 years, has YOUR work load increased while you've been promised this promotion?
They read books and attend seminars that teach them how to do these things.

Start looking for a new job. Find one you want, give notice and leave on good terms. Never burn your bridges if you can avoid it. Collecting unemployment is a pain if you quit, and it won't equal your current income.
