I bought one for my wife for Valentine's day, but it got really cold and when we brought it inside it seems to be dying.

I live in Southern Illinois, there is quite a bit of snow on the ground right now... we were going to replant it in a bigger pot with more soil and plant it outside in a month or so when the weather breaks.

Take it out of the dirt, clean the dirt of and place, remove all the dead leaves carefully, trim the roots slightly back and leave in vase until you see the bottom of the plant turning white and kinda slimy. You will see this in about a month or so. But you have to put the vase/jar in a warm space in the kitchen or a room where it wont get knocked down. Keep an eye on the water level though. Keep the water clean, dont let it get cloudy.

A bit more info would help here. How cold? What is your climate normally?

If this was a freak cold snap and the temps are usually warm (like no freezing temps), take the rose back outside. The leaves may drop off but should be replaced. The plant needs sunlight, get it outside.

Keep the soil barely moist, no fertilizer until new leaves emerge and are nearly full size.

If the roots froze and perhaps the entire plant, it may be a gonner. That's a problem with outdoor container plants, they soil protects a little bit, but there's very little soil.

If you live in a cold climate and the plant was in leaf, it should not have been outside. Plants must concentrate their plant sugars to survive cold weather.....it's called dormancy. A leafy green plant is not a dormant plant.

You can submerge the roots in a bucket of water and the rosebush should suck the water right up. If it is already in dirt water it a lot with a pan under the pot. The surplus water should be left so that the plant will suck that up too when it is needed.

Depending on where you live, the bush needs to be planted in the ground as soon as possible. It cannot survive for very long inside.

try mixing some used coffee grounds in with soil< The acid in the grounds is beneficial to roses

You might have to prune bush down to four inches above soil which wouldlet it start over< but still add grounds
