They were most probably ill, what were the conditions of the tank you initially bought them from? Or they could have just been stressed, how big were the fish in comparision to thier surroundings? This can be a major factor if they havent enough room.

Also did you use aquasafe or something similar to purify the water, because if you just added tap water, the chemicals and metals can kill them.

Goldfish love cold water....the colder the better
I personally use RO Water and it is definately the best way to go. You need to purchase a product that will increase your water hardness. There is a great mineral supplement out there called Geo Liquid available at www.discountedsuperstore.com Your pH should be around 6.8 - 7.2. Check ammonia levels (you should have none) Nitrites can also kill your fish. You really need to get a test kit for each. If this is a new tank, you added fish too quickly. Should only add about 5 small fish at a time in a huge tank. I have a 125 gallon tank and always use Geo Liquid in it. I have not had any problems with my fish since. Maybe look into getting some of that stuff. I put the link below

It could have been a number of things that killed your goldfish. Most petstores have a freshwater fish guarantee. If you saved your recept and the fish, you can bring that and the dead fish back to the petstore and they will test the water and more than likely give you a refund. You need to be more specific about the type of tank they were in, filter, if any? Did they have oxygen? Expand your question.

It could have been that the water was Chlorinated, too cold, not enough oxygen in water, etc... That would be my guess.
Their water is like our air. It needs to be clean, have enough oxygen content, warm/cold enough to breathe and survive, etc...

When you return the fish, ask the employees there how to avoid that... You should also visit some of the sites below...
