I speak eight, I read several others, and I am seriously thinking about starting Chinese.

You cannot begin to understand another person or another culture until you can think in their language. We do NOT all "think" the same - the way our language is structured influences how we see the world.

So the more languages you are able to speak, the more people you will be able to understand.

In today's global economy speaking your native tongue is not enough. Everyone in America should be taught Spanish when they are in grammer school. Spanish the language of choice because that is where the most need is; visit Miami and you will understand what I mean. Likewise newbies from Central and South America need to learn English, that brings up a separate topic alltogether. I am trying to learn Spanish all over again out of neccesity for work. I took Spanish in high school and in college but barely remember a thing I learned.

A lot of people haven't a good enough grasp on their first language to start looking for another. Personally, I'd love to learn another language, or more than one - communication is of great importance to me, and it would enable me to communicate better and with more people. They say language is best learned before the age of 12 so I'm miles late on that one (I regret there weren't too many options for learning other languages at school). At this point, I imagine it would take total immersion in another language to teach me. Reckon I should go overseas?

One language is not enough if you want to grow with society. I would like to learn a third language.

Knowing other languges can be confusing. Several years ago I was at work and picked up phone call from a spanish-speaking man. I went to put him on hold and said "uno momento, bitte". I laughed so hard I went into the 'wheezy laugh' (my version of the honk).

I speak English and German and the smallest smattering of Spanish due to being brought up in Texas, my husband speaks English, Italian and French my son and daughter are taking French and German respectively... AND... I speak Texan!

Right now I am vacationing in France with my family. I am a typical American who speaks only English. Boy I'd love to speak French right now. Nearly everyone is very patient with us, but it would still be great to speak French. I believe the more languages the better. Thanks.

It depends on the person and how much they travel. I know a few languages, but it's important to me. Some people are happy just knowing one. And that 's fine too.
