Power steering is far too complex for amateurs or back-yard mechanics to be fooling around with if you're not sure of what you're doing. As for the noise, most hydraulic systems will be noisy when cold. Try turning the steering wheel in each direction, a little farther each time until it gets to the stops. By then the fluid should be warm enough for safe operation. As for adding fluid, different makes of vehicles require different types of fluid. check your owners manual for the proper type. If your steering system is leaking, take it to a reputable repair shop for repair. It is not a job you can do at home.

chances are it's no big deal,.. the car may be extremely difficult to turn for the first 1-3 turns, however it will then turn normally. If your power-steering fluid is not low,.. do not add more, this could cause you more harm than good. If it's just a noise chances are it's just due to the cold, and you should have no trouble when the weather warms up a bit. Power steering repairs are usually very costly as the parts are moderately expensive and the labor hours to complete the repairs are high.

Why do you think it is leaking? I hope you haven't put too much fluids or worse the wrong kind of power steering fluid in there. Maybe you should have a mechanic or someone you trust that knows about cars have a look.

I live near Elmira, and it's cold here too. Check your belt for proper tension or if it's a serpentine belt check the belt tensioner. This system require a unusually tight pressure. Depending on the car some dealers can completely flush the system and put fresh approved fluid back in. If it continues to make noise a new or rebuilt pump may be the fault. All three of these items carry a different price tag. #1. new serpentine belt $35.00. System flush $50.00. Power steering pump changes greatly depending on brand of car. Low side $90. for rebuilt to a high of $200.00.

Does it make the most noise when you turn the wheel all the way to one side? If it is a hissing noise, and you have a leak, you may be able to replace the hoses, but if it is more of a growling sound, I bet the pump is going bad.
