I am of the opinion that America should do what we Europeans do for our European Elections and that is staggered voting.

All those states in the Eastern timezone vote on the Tuesday, Central Wednesday, Mountain Thursday, Pacific Friday, Alaskan and Hawaii Saturday.

But no votes are counted until all ballots arrive at the central counting location.

The problem with spreading voting out over several days is that you'll end up with the same problem as the primaries:
In the primaries, the nominees have been chose before each state has voted. The result is supressed voter turnout and increased voter apathy in the states that vote late.

I realize you mean that all states would vote at the same time, just allowing people 2 or 3 days to vote instead of 1, but the results would still be the same. Why would you vote on day 3 if enough ballots had been cast to decide the winner on day 1?

Its fine the way it is. If a person is serious about voting and they can't make it that day, they can still vote. How do you think all the millitary votes? Having it over a few days will not increase voter turn out. It will give them a chance to procrastinate and still not go and vote.

I think the counting of the votes should be overseen by U.N. observers: the way it is done in 3rd or 4th world countries. We have privatized the election machines, why not have the election tally privatized and shipped to Chad, or Ecuador, or Mongolia. That way we can be sure that somebody in those countries can make 25 cents an hour. But no potty breaks or lunch breaks, ok?

It should be a national holiday, like it is in other countries.

Religious groups would raise hell if it was put on one of their holy days, which counts out Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Frankly, 100 million people voting on one day and then having it tallied in one day is preposterous and is bound to be littered with errors. It should be done over a period of time, maybe 5 business days to vote and then using the weekend to verify and tally the results.

Just my opinion.

I have always thought it should be on Saturday; however, as one person already stated, if it is important they should make the effort. I always have made the effort and it was not always easy.
So, really, Saturday would be good.

All elections should be held on April 16th.

If it is important, people will make the effort to vote on Tuesday.
