a laptop is a handy tool for sure
laptop prices have crashed in recent times
no clumsy mesh of wiring . . .
... yet they have their downsides

hardware upgrades are difficult & some impossible
ram, hard drive ... possible
graphics not possible

repairs are very expensive
a cracked lcd screen outside of warranty could mean u having to scrap it altogether

get one only if u need it
sales / marketing, plant engineering, certain students,
... u know best

if you can do without it, i would advise a desktop
open a few screws & do any damn chip-chop any time, at ease

Well, technically a laptop is a computer and a desktop is a computer...but I know what you mean :-P

It all depends on what you are going to be using it for! If you plan on taking it with you wherever you go, the laptop is clearly the better option. However, if you just want something that stays at home, that can be on all the time, and has a bit more capability, a desktop is the better option.

Laptops have their limitations. They don't have the huge storage space that a desktop can have (well, you can get external hard drives...but that is more of an inconvenience). You can't leave them on all the time like you can a desktop. It is much much harder to upgrade hardware components. You pay more for less capability. However, they are portable, so you can use it anywhere.

Desktops are great if you don't need to take your computer with you places. They can hold huge amounts of information on a built in hard drive. They are great for gaming. You can upgrade hardware fairly easily. You can leave it on all the time and set it to do "maintenence" (like virus scans) overnight so it doesn't disrupt the time you are using it. They can be much less expensive than a laptop, and give more capability. However, you would want to invest in an appropriate uniterruptable power supply (UPS, battery backup). They are sensitive to changes in power, and if not protected, hardware can be damaged.

I have an HP laptop and a Compaq desktop. Both are very good computers, and I would highly recommend either (well, they are the same brand...but whatever). They have not had any hardware problems (yet...I have had the laptop for over 4 years, and the desktop for over 1 year). I have had the occaisional software issue, but that doesn't matter the brand, that just happens. Even our 5+ year old HP desktop hasn't had any problems! I also have an HP printer/scanner/copier and digital camera and they are great!

They both have advantages/disadvantages. A desktop is more stable, I would think. And they are MUCH easier to upgrade than a laptop, and the computer as well as the parts are less expensive.

But then again, a laptop can be taken anywhere. And you can get internet anywhere as long as you have a wireless card and can find a "hot spot."

Dell is the best brand that I've found. Their customer support is wonderful, too. I've NEVER had a problem with a Dell, other than the fact that they ARE somewhat picky about the parts you put in them.

A laptop is more convenient if you travel, but tends to have less power than a desktop. So it depends on if you need power (desktop) or flexibility (laptop).

As for brand: Mac. Nothing comes close, and this from a 22-year user of DOS, Windows and Linux before finding my comfort zone with my Powerbook.

Well if you need to take it places then a laptop is better, but if you are going to be working on it often then a desktop will be what you want. As far as brand, Macintosh is the way to go.

I prefer a laptop - you can take it with you, or you can hide it (against burglars) when you're away from home. (Remember to keep it well ventilated while you're using it...laptops aren't as well ventilated as desktops and may more easily overheat.) If you want durability and long life, IBM is the brand. If you want sheer power, *my* opinion is IBM, HP, Acer, Toshiba

laptops are more portable and convienent but sometimes are slower and more obsolete than desktop computers which can be reworked on the inside more and can have better things inside them
