I wouldn't let your lack of participation in the past keep you from trying out for the team this year. At worst you'll get another kind of workout on a daily basis, experience what the camaraderie of a team sport can be like and learn more about the game. Football can help you understand the principles behind a variety of other disciplines from orchestrating complex systems to quickly making decisions and taking action.

If I were you, I would talk to the head coach now so he can get you started on the team's training opportunities. It would serve you well to learn the basics now and become familiar with the terminology and plays your team uses. The coach can also help you decide what positions to try out for.

As a newcomer to the team you may not be accepted by the others right away, but if you show them how hard you're willing to work and how you can help the team, they may be willing to sooner rather than later. Also, you may not get to play as much as the guys that have been there all three previous seasons.

But it can be fun, even in practice. Best of luck!

Why not??? If you do not start now you will never play and you will regret it for a lifetime. If it is something that you want to do then go for it with all you have. It is never too late unless you never start.

As far as positions....Receiver or cornerback would be your best bets. That decision would depend on how good your hands are and whether you want to provide the hits or receive the hits. And then of course...whether you are better defending and breaking on the ball or running routes and catching the ball.

You could also play running back if you are quick and strong enough. There are plenty of RB's out there your size and smaller.

If you were able to put on about 20 lbs of muscle and not sacrifice speed you might consider free safety or strong safety.

And don't forget, there is always punt return if you are looking for punishment, can catch the ball and make someone miss.

Good luck!!!

Go For It! I been playing football since I was in 5th grade. I now play semi pro football and have a couple of try-outs coming up for some pro teams. It really doesn't matter if you didn't play Freshman through Junior years. The only thing that does matter is, if you are athletic. It sounds like you are a good size young man and you might want to try-out for running back, wide receiver, or defensive back. Once again those positions normally go to some pretty athletic players, but if you are in shape and have a good work ethic then there is no doubt in my mind that you could be a good player. I wish you the best of luck with your decision and have fun.

yeah do it man, or you'll regret it the rest of your life. Im not kidding. If the team sucks, you've got a much better chance of making it. I'm in a similar position, except im 5 foot 9 and weak and my team was the state runner-up last year. And I've missed the first month of weightlifting (which is mandatory) because I was trying to get better before I did it in front of people. So for the sake of all us losers out there, do it. You'll probably be a defensive back, and depending on how strong you are you could even be a linebacker. Good luck, bro

Go 4 it! It will be a great experience for you. It might open up some doors for you as well. Go out there and work hard. You might want to tell the coach that you are coming out for the team now, so that you can build a rapport with him and the assistant coaches. Your position will be based on how quick you can change directions, catch, tackle...etc. When you talk to the coach just tell him that you will play wherever he needs you to play. If your team is small you may have to play outside linebacker though. WR, DB, RB would be my recommendations though.

Hey man I think you should go out what do you have to lose? If you want to talk to the coach and see if he has any ideas about positions, he can also get you in a lifting program with the team and let you know about spring and summer workouts so you can get in football shape and learn as much as you can. If i had to choose a position I would probably put you on defense to start probably as defensive back or maybe even a weakside linebacker. What division is your high school in? How big is your high school? Have you played football before? Let me know how it turns out man.

Since the team isn't very good you probably have a good chance of starting. Depending how big your school is you may be one of the bigger players on the team. So you could look at LB, TE, or QB if you have any kind of arm. If you go to a bigger school you would be a perfect fit as a safety. Big strong fast safetys can anchor a defence with their run stopping and pass defending skills

Hey, I know how painful it is to miss so many years when you seem like you're really good. Here's the thing if you want to get a college scholarship from football than yes I'd say you should bring your team to about 5-3 if you try out for running back. You'll make the team for sure if nobody try's out!

Why do you want to play?

Football is a rough sport, and you WILL get hurt. It may be a tiny knuckle sprain or you may tear your ACL. Eventually you will hurt something. Football, to me, is all about heart. You have to want to dominate people on the field and never settle for anything but the best from yourself. For a 1 hr game, you have to train and memorize plays for hours.

Does that sound like fun?

It is, and nothing beats making a play and seeing your friends and teammates cheer.

To make that one play takes many hours of prep. If you dont have the will or heart, dont waste your time. If you are doing it for everyone else but yourself dont do it.

Positionally, it depends what you like to do. Im a defensive guy... so play safety or corner. Offense play WR, QB, or RB.

Go for it dude, the team need you! Fast and strong? Running back or linebacker. But the coach will evaluate you and may make a decision based on need. Go see the coach and get started ASAP!
