Chicken is a general word for the animal.
Hen is a female chicken
Rooster is a male chicken.

If you try and type the other name for a rooster (****) Yahoo automatically censors it. LOL

A hen is a female and has laid eggs. A chicken can be a male or a female - it is just young and not used for breeding. Once a female chicken lays an egg, it can be called a hen.

The term "chicken" can be used to refer to both indivual male and female chickens.

The term "poultry" refers to chickens as a whole.

Now to break it down by gender and age:

A c#ck is an adult male chicken.
A hen is an adult female chicken.
A cockerel is a young male chicken.
A pullet is a young female chicken.

The term rooster refers to a male chicken, but the term can refer to an old male or young male.

Chickens are normally broken up into two main types: standard & bantam.

Standard chickens are larger and normally stand about 3 feet tall.
Bantam chickens are shorter and normally stand about 1 foot tall.
Each breed normally occurs in both sizes.
