it is one of those words that are offensive to transgenders as with shemale but it is widely used by the transgender porn industry to mean a transgender

I'm not sure how many countries in East Asia this counts for but in Thailand Ladyboys are men that look and dress like women. You really can't tell the difference between them. My father lives in Thailand and says that a lot of the ladyboys work hard to save money to have the 'op'. He has told me stories of ladyboys he has met that saved enough money to have one breast implant and were saving to have the other done. I know it wounds silly but it really does happen. he also says that Thai people are able to spot Ladyboys better than the tourists, they are just so beautiful. It is a very big thing in Thailand but it is also accepted by everyone, there is no prejudice at all towards them at all, not like you would have in this country. They are accepted as everyday people. In the tourist areas of Thailand there are Ladyboy shows. They are just like Vegas, with the big feathers in the hats, glittery costumes etc. My dad is going to take me to one when i go there. I hope this helps you.
I just read others answers and some state that it is an offensive term. Well it maybe to trangender people in the west but it is actually an accepted term in Thailand. These men call themselves ladyboys.

An effeminate looking male who dresses as a woman but still has his male genitals. Ladyboys are very common and popolar in the far east. Thailand etc.
