No. But to be a gangsta rapper, you often have to deliver a fake media image and pretend that you either were or still are a gang member. You think all these guys in the media are ex crims, killers, etc? I mean, there might be a couple who were, but it's mainly all hogwash.
Anyway, I actually preferred it when there wasn't such a high proportion of rap that talked about "Pimpin'", etc. I liked early/mid 90s rap better than the stuff of today, like Coolio, LL Cool J, etc. A lot of the stuff now drives me up the wall.

Do you have to be a Hells Angel and use crystal meth to be in a heavy metal band?
Do you have to be in the Klan to sing country music?
Of course not!!!
So why would you think that all rappers are gang members?
Could it possibly be because you have a racist and stereotyped view of African Americans???
REALITY CHECK
Not all Black people are gang members (actually the largest gang in America, the Aryan Brotherhood, is an all-White organization!) - so, obviously, the vast majority of rappers are not gang members!

No you don't. but the problem is, some people do. thats why you kinda get the feeling that your not complete into getting to your goal(being a rapper) Its a very common misconception. like smoking, if you don't smoke, people find you "uncool" so does applies in having a gang to be a rapper.

No. Is Kanye West, Common, or Mos Def in a gang? No. Most of those lyrics are just "talk". They don't really do that stuff.
