It's totally unjust if the government can give you money and you're not sure whether you can spend it or not because they might have made a ****-up, and then might ask for it back.

I don't know whether you'll have to pay it back or whether you have grounds to fight it. But I do know that they can't ask you to pay it all back in one go. They just send out those kind of demands to get your attention.
Don't worry. If you do end up having to pay it back, give the a few quid a month.
But I would get some professional advice on this. Maybe the citizens advice bureau could help.

They cannot take it back all in one go. If it is their error then you may not even need to pay it back your best bet would be to take any paperwork you have to the Citizens advice bureau and let them help you. As long as you are willing to pay it back (if you are liable that is) and you offer them a reasonable sum and that can be as little as £5 a week they have to accept it. If they threaten you with court then tell them to take you to court as the court is more reasonable if you can show that you have been willing to pay the money back .

God I feel so sad for what is going on with this. When I had my daughter I was SCARED to apply for Tax Credits because my mum had problems with them with my youngest sister and I worried if they would come back to me demanding cash later on. My mum in the end phoned them up and told them not to bother giving her the contributon and she would manage somehow. It's so stupid because it's not your mistake. Can you talk to your Citizen's Advice? Or see a solicitor? They must be able to come up with something. Hope you get it sorted. They have so many errors in their system etc it's awful.

firstly contact them and talk to an adviser, and ask about the clause that if you think you were payed the right amount of money for the right resone then you do not have to repey the money, but whatever you do ,do not leave it ,it will not go away
Say that you dispute there findings and you were payed what you were entitled to,they have made thousands of mistakes,,,,
good luck,,

First off, calm down...Don't Panic or kill yourself.
2nd if you have the kids then you are entitled to the benefit. Tell them to stuff it and contact your local MP (and a solicitor if you can afford it).
