The 4 quadrants show a stylized propellor, BMW started the business in aeronautics, building prop engines for airplanes. The blue and white alternating colors represent the Bavarian flag, which is light blue and white rhombus shapes. The blue and white represent the Bavarian sky, which is mentioned in the Bavarian Hymn as being white and blue.

The BMW roundel is a stylised, rotating airscrew - the blue representing the sky. That's right - Bayerische Motoren Werke built military aero engines for the planes that bombed the factories that they now own. It's a funny old world.

BMW as someone has already said use to make planes many years ago. the logo is in fact an optical elusion you see when you look at the propeller blades turning at speed. The first ever car they produced was an Austin 7 made under license. Ironic isn't it.
