You can get rich by winning the lottery, becoming a NBA Star, speculating, asset flipping, gambling, picking the right parents or prospecting for gold, diamonds, nickel, whatever, but you can’t become wealthy doing any of these things.

Wealth derives from control over a factor of production, a license, a franchise, a territory, a concession*, some IP (Intellectual Property like the secret formula for Coca Cola or the 11 secret herbs and spices that the Colonel uses to make fried chicken), a competitive advantage, a comparative advantage, property ownership—anything that creates a sustainable, repeating and renewable income stream; it is your ‘pixie dust’—the magic that really makes your business work.

Although the answers down there so far are good ones...I always told my daughters that the different between a rich man and a wealthy man is this;
The rich man uses credit cards to buy drinks for his friends...and brags about his money and contacts.
The wealthy man doesn't have a credit card and doesn't need to brag cause he owns the establishment. Now, which one do you want?

The best description I've heard of the difference between a rich and wealthy person was given by the comedian Chris Rock. In his example he used Shaquille O'Neal. It went something like this:

"Rich" is Shaquille O'Neal. "Wealthy" is the guy who signs his checks.
