My niece is 2 days overdue and has only dilated 2 cm. We thought because she is young and this is her first that she would give birth rather quickly. Is there anything besides walking that could make her dilate quicker. Or should we just continue to walk her. She's miserable and just wants to give birth already lol.

I should have added, she's actually in the hospital, so she can't really have sex. How long will they usually let you go without giving you something to speed the process along?

Everyone told me first time baby's came fast, HA! Yeah tell that to me after the 21 hours it took me. I honestly don't believe anything anyone tells me anymore, wives tales, myths, I stick to what I know, what the doctor tells me and just common sense now.
I"m on my 3rd at 31 weeks. My first I got up and walked, it does relaly help as much as it doesn't seem like anything is helping, gravity and the mvoement does help. Slow, but it's there. Also, if her partner (didn't want to say husband and make waves!) Have them support her up and down the halls, rub her lower back , kneed it or even take a tenise ball to help those muscles, it doesn't help things go faster but it does feel good at least.
You can try sqauting, but not everyone likes these, it's hard to get up and down, so support is always needed.
If she enjoys it, get some music on and try dancing, though I doubt it would be real dancing goign on, the swaying could keep her mind busy and feet moving without really needing anything but her partners arms around her for support.
Doctors won't let her go that far, trust me, if somethign comes up or the time doesn't pass quick enough they will induce her , meaning they'd help her dilate. First tiem mothers they really do try and let nature take it's course, they always try and let it take it's course. But when the mother is too tired, and or the baby may be stressing they will jump in when the time comes.
The most you can do is keep mother relaxed , which isn't all that easy. Keep her focused on just breathing and moving, maybe bring movie if they have a vcr, a game, dance as I said, that's comforting to some plus who would pass up a chance to be held? ( I"m not talking waltzing here, just the swaying type that lets face it a woman in labor can do at the most. Been there done that.)
Either way, labor is long, short for some long for others. But it takes time, and patience, doctors won't just sit back and watch unless they think thigns are fine. So keep that in mind. Walking is great, keep her relaxed try rubbing the back, get her feet up when she sits.

Good luck!

First babies take a long time, that's the rule. Sure it isn't always true but really 10 days overdue and 24 hours of labour aren't abnormal.

As for dilation of the cervix semen and evening primrose oil can help. More about evening primrose oil here: http://www.gentlebirth.org/archives/natinduc.html#Ripening

But really, and I can't stress this enough. THE MORE PEOPLE AROUND HER AND THE MORE PRESSURE SHE IS UNDER THE LESS LIKELY SHE IS TO GO INTO LABOUR AND FOR LABOUR TO PROGRESS.

There is a reason that almost all animals and most humans labour in the middle of the night. Stress inhibits labour and people are meant to labour largely alone.
