In the information age, people think themselves more independent of one another. They don't feel as powerless on their own. In the industrialization age, it didn't feel that way: one really had to be a "good sitizen" and it was quite obvoius if one is helpful or detrimental. In other words, life was harder but simpler.

Any reason why is this under dancing?

i don't think this was how it was before. look at WWII while people didn't want to go to war they did, they were proud of it an when they got back they felt they had made a difference in the world. it's the children of the WWII vets (the baby boomers) who became selfish and self centered, worried more about making money then making a difference (stock market crash in the 80's, internet bubble burts, Vietnam) and they've taught their children the same ideals. its only recently with the next generation (generation y) that people have started to think about other things but it's still along road before power transfers between the generations and things change.
