IQ scores are a perfect example of a population that conforms to a bell curve or a normal distribution. What this means is that if you picked any number of people at random, the following statistics would hold true, at least in theory. The mien is 100 (average score of the population) and deviation from the mien is 15 pts. This means that 66% of the population have an IQ score of between 85 (low average) to 115 (high average), 84% have a score between 70 (liberals) and 130 (conservatives) and 99% between 55 (show them pity) and 145 (getting up around genius territory). Mensa requires an IQ of 160 to join their club.

It is true that standardized test have been developed and used for many years that provide a rough estimate of intelligence and there is a rough correlation between a person's IQ score and how well they are able to accomplish many different types of tasks that they encounter in the "real" world. It is an extremely valuable tool, but often misused and misinterpreted and does not tell the whole story, by far!

An IQ test is made up of several little tests, all measuring different skills. Somebody could perform in a superior range on measures of verbal abstract reasoning and be considered a brillant thinker, but score in a well below average range on measures of spatial processing and end up with an overall low score. There are famous architects who have not scored in an overall "average" range (between 85-115 on one of the most popular tests), because they have learning disabilities that hinder their verbal skills. And their are famous scientists who are considered brilliant, who have done poorly on IQ tests simply because they have an attention deficit disorder and could not demonstrate their intelligence adequately.

To understands someone's abilities you have to look at all of their scores. Everyone has strenghts and weaknesses. And you have to see how well they are able to use those abilities in real life situations.

IQ tests typically only measure certain types of intelligence. They don't measure everything that somebody needs to function well in this world. There has been a lot of effort to try to expand IQ tests to try to include those other essential abilities such as "emotional IQ", interpersonal awareness, creativity, common sense, and humor.

I don't believe we will ever be able to develop a test that can assess everything about us. We are all more than the sum of our parts! Each person is just too unique, too special!

Kerry above is correct, but he forgot to add that there is a plus or minus factor of 10 points to correct for errors. So a low achieving score on IQ tests would be 70 and lower. High achieving would be 130 or higher. Normal would be the range from 80 to 120.
If they use a short version of the test, it scores higher naturally on the low part of the range, with a starting base score of 50, so you may want to ask what version was used.

IQ tests are measured by standard deviation. The "average" is 100. One standard deviation higher or lower is plus or minus 20 points. Therefore, 120 is very high, 80 being very lower than average. 80 percent of people fall within one standard deviation above and below the average.

the average iq is supposed to be 100, but due to factors like the Flynn effect and unaccurate test scorings, the average is more like 110.

iq is taken dividing ones mental age (how 'old' their brain is, how smart the score says you are) by one's chronological age (how old one really is) and multiplying by 100
