First cycle the hold switch on top of your I-Pod. Then with with the hold switch in the off position, it will show white not orange, hold the center and menu button on the scroll wheel at the same time for 10 to 15 seconds until the Apple logo appears. This has cleared up this same problem for me in the past.
Please visit this page if that does not help.

Well, I only have an iPod shuffle, so I don't know everything about this, but I'll do my best to try and help. But uh, yeah my computer was doing something like that too. Do you have the latest version of iTunes on your computer? If you don't, you can download it at www.itunes.com. Also, are you just unplugging it from your computer or are you ejecting it from your computer first? It can really screw up your iPod and your computer if you just unplug it. To safely remove it, you can go into iTunes, and if your computer reads your iPod, there should be an icon on the sidebar of the iTunes window. Right click on your iPod icon, and then click eject. If this doesn't work, I suggest talking to Tech Support for your problem. I hope this works for you.
