Well because one day a small child was playing by the beach with a pineapple and a sponge, and he decided that he would leave the pineapple there for the sponge to live in...he bade them both farewell, and tossed them both into the sea...and then Spongebob Squarepants was born lol

Do you want a logical answer?

Lets start with: why does a sponge wears pants? To hide his genitalia, of course.

Why does he chose a starfish for a friend, when the show is always named after the real star?

Why does the squid play a clarinet? six arms could do wonders on a piano.

Who would ever eat at a place named the "Crabby Patty?"

All these conundrums and yes, we love the show.

Are you ready Kids? Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?...

Because some lazy person threw their trash (a pineapple they decided they no longer wanted) into the ocean and when it sank to the botton, Sponge Bob moved in.

I guess if someone attached weights to it and threw it into the sea it might sink down underneath the water.
