In the nitration of bromobenzene, why is the bromobbenzene added in small amounts over a period of time?

it has been a few years but from what i rememgber it is because of the reaction..

if i remember right you have to keep it below ar at 55 degrees... and slowly bring it to room temp... untill all of the bromobebzene has been added.. then you can use hot water to bring it to 60 degrees...for like 10 to 20 minutes then pour the whole thing over crushed ice...carry out vacuum filtration with a Buchner funnel to precipitate crude product mixture cake filter it... but it has been like years.. for me
