Angie said hackers don't usually attack the common folk. When in reality, it's the complete opposite. They target the common population and personal computers all the time.
The reason being that many people do NOT protect (or know how to protect) their computer from hackers. And there's no way to 100% proof a system. I've seen websites for large corporations go down due to hackers.
But you would need to get some sort of anti-virus software. If you use a spyware detection program, like SpyBot, it won't do you any good. I don't recommend wasting your time.
Get an anti-virus, and then look into a firewall. But in order to fix the problem at hand, I'd suggest running a virus scan, and then running "CHKDSK" in Windows. Start-Run->cmd and press OK. Then, type:
chkdsk x: /F
Where 'x' is the drive letter of the infected drive, and is most often 'c'.
But don't be fooled. Hackers, like I said, DO target the common population moreso than others.

Ok, which is it? You said you've been hacked and all your programs screwed up. Then you ask for any good programs that find trojans and viruses. Which is it? There are many good, free programs for trojans, worms, spyware and viruses, none of which are the same thing.
SpyBot and Ad-Aware, both free from download.com

Choice 1:
If you know for sure you have been hacked as in owned you
need to disconnect your computer from the Internet immediatly.
There is no telling what an attacker did to the system so it's best to start from a clean slate with your xp cdrom and product key and reformat the box and secure it properly this can take about 2-3 hours (reformat and lock down the system) when you reinstall your system make sure you update it for the latest security patches from Microsoft.
Here is links for helping lock down the box if you want to do
it yourself.

Choice 2:
I'd highly suggest reaching out and getting experinced help you can try geek squad http://www.geeksquad.com/ they'll secure your system and update your computer with the latest patches it's not free but at least it'll be done right by people who know what their doing if you make a mistake securing your Computer the Hacker will break in again and you'll be right back where you started from.

Norton Anti-virus is best, though not cheap. Spybot is free and works quite well. Use a clean and safe computer to go to Download.com and get the anti-spyware program. Best of Luck!:-)=

TURN THE COMPUTER AS IT BOOTS UP TO SAFE MODE == HIT F8 REPEATEDLY THIS BRINGS YOU TO A SCREEN. HIT SAFE MODE AND THEN SCAN FOR VIRUSES AND SPYWARE. MY STRONG GUESS IS YOU GOT VIRUSED. IF EVERYTHING IS SCREWED UP AFTER YOU GET IT OFF, YOU GOT TO DO A d.s.m.r destructive system memory restore- taking you back to the original way the comp. was when you bought it. YUP! WELL TRY YOUR BEST AND NEXT TIME CAREFUL WHERE YOU TREAD........

If you have been hacked that means you do not have a firewall, so I suggest that along with the anti-virus suggestions above you download a firewall as well, Zone alarm is the best.

DON'T PANIC!
I highly doubt someone hacked you. Hackers don't usually target the common folk. However, it DOES sound like you have what you suggested: a virus, trojan, etc...
AVG is a freebie antivirus program:
http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html
Spybot is a freebie antispyware program:

Adaware is a freebie antiadware program:

Download and run one at a time.
