Washing the walls was a good start, if you wish to paint, you may have to use a primer type paint. Also, washing the walls down in a white vinegar and water solution will clean the walls and something about the solution really helps the paint to adhere to the walls. (I have no idea as to the scientific principle behind it, I just know that it works)

I once moved into an apartment where the previous tenant had not only been a smoker, he was also a reluse! It was DISGUSTING!! I had to use a primer called "Killz" on the walls and then the paint adhered just fine. Get your boyfriend to start smoking outside too. Your house will smell a thousand times better. Good Luck.

You might want to use a primer coat underneath at least two coats of paint. Primer is white and will help cover the dinginess and make the paint coats brighter.

Rubbing or denatured (can be found in a paint store or painting dept.) alcohol will cut the thick goo left on the wall from smoking. Then you can paint it as you normally would.

Wash them first. If you are using a latex paint, the paint may not adhere to the walls, and eventually peel off. Oil based paints are virtually odour free now, and this may be your best solution.

Before you paint you should use the primer called Killz. It will get rid of a lot of the odor, then paint over that.....
