I can understand getting email spam when a product or service is being advertised or when someone is trying to scam me. But why do people bother sending spam when it contains no link to a website or product, and in some cases no text, or nothing that is intelligible?

A related question: if spammers want me to read their messages, why do they use names that are obviously fake?

Note that I don't open spam, or attachments, it all gets filtered and deleted. The rare occasion when I have opened one by mistake though led to me asking the question

Everyday spammers find new routes to try to get into your email inbox. Spam consists of unwanted advertising, but some can transmit viruses, ad ware or spy ware on to your computer and cause problems. A lot of time is wasted sorting through the email received and deleting Spam email While it is not possible to totally eliminate Spam email, you can keep junk emails manageable. I have seen a brief study on spam in the following site. It is very useful .I recommend that you adopt the methods suggested there and get benifitted.

The No. 1 rule of email: If you don't know who it's from and you didn't ask for it, IT'S SPAM - GET RID OF IT!
The No. 2 rule of email: If you don't know who it's from and you didn't ask for it DON'T OPEN IT AND DON'T ANSWER IT!
that's how spam is spread. Often with today's spam, just opening the message is enough to tell them they have a live person at that address. Then you get MORE spam.

It's an annoyance that clutters the servers on the Internet--unwanted and unneeded bandwidth hogging spam. It's an attempt to clog the Internet with clutter! That's what they are doing--the messages serve nothing more than to slow the world down. The perpetrators are also a**hole*, the same a**hoole* that spread viruses for no reason other then personal "staisfaction"?

A lot of times, they are just trying to get you to open up the email, which could allow viruses or some type of system to match your keystrokes to get personal information.

I'm trying to figure this out myself...
I think it's retards testing out their email bots and fine tuning their spamming software.

To spread e-mail viruses. You should delete all mail from obviously fake names or some strange subject line. You should really delete all bulk or junk mail.
