max payne cheats?

has anyone actaully got the max payne cheats to work,in the book it says you need to right ckick the desktop icon and were the "target " is you need to add -developer after the target,but every time i try it says its a invalid target
if anyone knows how to activate this cheat,i would be very gratefull for assisitance
