For an Honours Degree in the UK:
A First requires a mark of 70% or above (which equates to an A)
A 2:1 is an Upper Second class degree, which requires 60-69% (a B)
A 2:2 is a Lower Second class degree, 50-59% (a C)
Third class honours are 40-49% (a D)
Below 40% is a fail.
Hope this helps!

First is a first class university degree.
2:1 = Upper Second Class Degree
2:2 = Lower Second Class Degree
3 = Third Class Degree
I now that a 2:2 is lovingly known as a 'Desmond' - as in Desmond 'Tutu'! There are other affectionate names for each grade but I can't remember them offhand.
