Aren't you asking for a book here? Law in Britain is very complex. There are even differences by country. Scotland and England have different legal codes. Then, there are many ways for something to become law in Britain, even if it dates back to 'time immemorial' which is 1189, I think.

To cover all the nuances of British law is not an easy thing to do. I would recommend that you look up related references in something like wikipedia for a start.
