Hello. I had a friend over and she was accessing our wireless service using her own laptop. She said to change the WEP address. After we did all of that, we had nothing but problems. The last problem was that the desktop would only stay connected for about 2 minutes and disconnect. I would have to play with it for a minute and it would recconect and disconnect after 2 minutes. The laptop worked fine. I was on the phone with verizon and the computer company for hours. They couldn't do anything. I made an appointment with the Geeksquad for Monday. Last night, while trying to fix it myself, I disabled the wireless icon in the tray and was able to enable it again. Since then, i've had no problems. It's been an hour today that i've been on and it hasn't disconnected. I was just wondering how disabling fixed the problem. Is it like refreshing? Also, do you think it will stay this way? If so, I would like to cancel my geeksquad appointement because it will cost a good amount. Thanks!

Sheez... cancel Geek Squad. Most of them won't know any more about wireless than you do.

It's common for windows drivers and other system peripherals to "hiccup". This can cause intermittent problems that can drive you nuts. Disabling, then re-enabling a device refreshes the drivers, etc., curing the hiccup. Restarting your computer can sometimes have the same effect.

You may have this problem again in the future, you may not. Either way, the fix is usually just as simple. If the problem becomes persistent, your first step is to uninstall, then reinstall the wireless card on the computer (which completely reloads the drivers). If the problem still persists, you have a hardware problem and the card needs to be replaced.

Often, wireless connection problems can be solved simply by disabling the wireless adapter or card and re-enabling it. In doing so, the computer refreshes the information that the adapter collects, which can correct many common wireless problems.

I recommend canceling the GeekSquad appointment. IF IT BEGINS TO GIVE YOU TROUBLE AGAIN, go into Network Connections, click the link on the left "View Network Connections," right click the connection you use to access the internet (the wireless card or the LAN) and click "repair." If this does not fix your problem, you may want to download and run the TCP/IP WinSock fixer: http://files.snapfiles.com/localdl834/WinsockxpFix.exe

If the above are not useful, then you may want to call the GeekSquad.
