It is very possible that they may have missed it at 7 weeks, when they are that small, it's entirely possible that one was behind the other or something, don't stress about it too much right now, at your 20 week ultrasound there's no way that they'll miss it then, and they may not have missed anything, they may have your due date wrong and you could be a lot further along than they think. My friend who was 5 months along when I was nine was huge... the same size as me if not bigger and she ended up having the baby full term two months later... they just miscalculated how far along she was.

You've had two separate scans, and the odds are that twins would have shown up on one or the other - especially as in one of those scans they were checking specifically to see if you were having twins, so they'd have looked from different directions.
Midwives sometimes don't realise what a major impact a flippant comment like "Crikey, that's a big one! Are you sure it's not twins?" can have on an expectant mother.
But even if you are having twins, is there anything you can do about it now?

When I was a student nurse in Ireland, on my maternity placement a woman came in in labour, had an emergency C-section and discovered she had been carrying twins all along, one was lying exactly beside the other and they never detected an extra arm/leg/heartbeat on all of her scans, just said baby was big for dates. The second twin was a bit on the small side but both were well and healthy, spent 5 days in neo natal care, 2 days in step up care and then went home with their very surprised parents!!

Being that they did a scan at 7 weeks, it would be hard to miss another baby. Early scans are the best at determining multiples. It gets harder and harder as you progress. There is a slight chance that there is another, but like I said, being that the early scan only showed one, its likely there is only one. They listened for a heartbeat at your 12 week? If they only pick up one heartbeat AND only saw one baby, well you can figure it. There is always a chance. Best of luck.

IF scans were taken several times and no indication of twins showed up on all of them, I would say the scans are pretty accurate. You may be having a very big baby.

There is a chance, but until you get the official word try not to THINK you are having twins. I was humongous about the belly when I was pregnant, but pretty small everywhere else all things considered and everywhere I went (except to my Doctor!!) everyone was all, "You're having twins! I KNOW you are! You are sooo big!" Well, I would've liked twins, but if I had let myself really BELIEVE I was having them, I could have done the mother guilt disappointment thing if even it would have been just my little dirty secret. I just had a really big baby girl. So for sanity's sake, you are having one baby. Stick to that train of thought. And congrats! Big babies are the best!!!

it could be possible, my wife was 8weeks pregnant when we found out she was having our twin daughters however it has been known for a twin to hide behind each other. However in saying that I would have thought that at 17weeks pregnant that if there was twins then a second heartbeat would have been picked up by the midwife. I suggest that you go and see your gp again for a further check up. It also normal for some woman to be bigger than average in pregnancy. good luck

being a father of four myself, and with twins either side of our family, when we were pregnant with our 4th we thought that we had twins but we voiced our concerns to the midwife at the third scan. And she went out of her way to make sure that there was only one in there, she double checked on the scan and she also got out a a piece of machinery called a sonic-aid which they use to detect heart beats within mum.It is quit common for women with their first baby to hold a lot of fluids so it might be something as simple as that.
