It depends upon the child. I would say whenever the child could sit quietly and behave and enjoy the experience.

Do you mean at all, or unaccompanied? I've already taken my kids (ages four and three) to the theater before. Unaccompanied, though, would depend on the movie and its content.

If you're a parent, you can check with the local theaters, some of them offer special days, where kids movies are shown in theaters and parents are encouraged to bring kids of all ages. There is no expectation for the room to stay quiet, so there is no pressure on the parent.

Let's talk about development, not about age. Yea, yo'd think they'd be the same thing.
My son would have quiet as could be when he was two years old, in public, but I think the noise and the dark would have scared the bejesus out of him, so I put if off.
Some kids should never go to the movies, becaue without their Ritalin (which replaces parent training, of course), they are off the wall, and with it, they'll just sleep through it.
And never, ever, under any circumstances, should a child be dragged to the movies because mum and dad can't find a sitter.

If the kid is old enough to sit thorugh a full-length movie on DVD without getting restless or bored, then you might be able to get him/her to sit through a movie in a theater.

Under NO circumstances should you take a little one into ANY movie rated higher than "G". I quit going to movies myself because it breaks my heart to see 6 and 7 year-old kids being hauled into chainsaw massacre movies and such.

It depends on the movie your watching in the movie theater. I would start around 5 or 6.

If behavior isn't an issue (b/c some adults don't know how to act at the movies) them I say old enough to stay awake during the entire movie. I took my daughter to the movies when she was 4. She fell asleep, and everytime I tried to wake her up she was like I'm not sleep and didn't want to leave. I didn't take her back until she was like 7 or 8.

We took our 3 1/2 yr old to go see the movie Cars. He was totally amazed by the whole experience...The huge screen, popcorn, surround sound. It was a really fun time for all of us.

i took my daughter to movies with me since the time she was an infant. she usually slept as a baby, but when she fussed or cried i immediately left the theater so as not to ruin it for other patrons. as she got older, i made sure to only take her to age appropriate movies. and as always, i understood that we might end up leaving early, either because she lost patience, or some unexpected "surprise" showed up in the movie. you really have to take it child by child, if they enjoy movies at home, i think in general, 2-3 years old is a good time to start testing it, with movies for children.

well I suppose you could bring a child at any age, but they would have to be about 4 to understand to be quiet during a movie
