Actually, the criticism that the government agricultural program has destroyed the environment has an answer. The first government programs to aid farmers revolved around soil conservation and preserving the environment.

After the New Deal programs destroyed hogs and milk to raise the prices in the market while many in the cities starved, the priority changed. The new priority became providing a large supply of inexpensive food, while trying to help farmers. This has led, in time, to chemical based growing techniques that maximize production of inexpensive food.

It means that food is plentiful and therefore cheap.

Cheap food means that poor people can afford to eat.

It means poor kids don't go to bed hungry.
