Well I am outside of the Washington DC area and had a job interview in the southern side of Charlotte back in June. Let me tell you- do not move there!!! The humidity in early June was almost unbearable. The layout was also kind of ho-hum. It seemed we would drive for miles and still be in "suburbia", with lack of definition to the communities. There are no hills, it is very flat and not pretty at all. The homes to me were a little pricey, and thats comparing to DCNorthern VA standards, which rival California. The people seemed really nice though! You may be bored and take a while to adjust.................

Slappy below me has it all right, but Concord is by far the best I have seen. A small but quaint (couldnt think of a better term) city and directly north of Charlotte. Lived there for one year. Avoid the area within a three mile radius of the Mall and racetrack though, bad traffic at times.
As for beach bum, Im a bit offended being born and raised in Charlotte. The land is somewhat flat and ANYWHERE in the south east (excluding urban Atlanta) will be sprawled out... pretty much anywhere in the whole SOUTH forthat matter. Heat/humidity in the summer can get harsh at times, but hey, better than the cold in my opinion. You get used to it and these are the best days to take a trip to the pool.
And for catmom, I agree about Gastonia but not Pineville, too many potheads (Im not kidding, i promise). Pineville is pretty but if you have kids, stay away. If you have kids, Concord is the best.
The Lake Norman area is a bit more expensive, though Im sure the numbers dont seem so big to those relocating from CA and the north (lots of those by the way). One little town i highly recommend and wish i could raise my family myself is Lake Park, NC. VERY cute! Also try lookingup Mint Hill Huntersville and Matthews, and Union County and Cabarrus County. I do not recommend Belmont. If you have any questions about a neighborhood/are feel free to email me msgiler@uncc.edu
I promise i dont mind! Good luck house hunting!

I moved from Sacramento to Charlotte. It is a big change, everything moves at a slower pace, but the people are much nicer. It is cheaper to live, but Charlotte is the most expensive city in this area. Gastonia area is pardon my expression much more redneck than any area near Charlotte. There are plenty of restaurants and shopping in any part of Charlotte, but if you want to shy away from the City Pineville is a very nice place to live. Lake Norman is a very nice area to raise a family as well, plus you are at the lake which provides plenty of summer activities. You have excellent health care options in this area too. I think you will love it, plus you are in the middle of the state, 3-4 hours from the beach or the mountains. The worst thing about this area is racism is still a big deal, so if your family is mixed be prepared for stares. For shopping you will definately want to go to Concord Mills, or Carolina Place Mall (pineville). Both of these places are about 15 mins outside of Charlotte. Also, Fort Mill, SC is a great place for the family, small town, great schools, and cheaper to live in SC than NC, and you are still only 15 mins away from Charlotte and surrounding areas.

Gastonia, Matthews, Midlands and Stanley suck... out loud!
Kannapolis and Cornelius are nice... Concord, too... Consider Huntersville, too, and maybe Belmont. Of all of those, Huntersville is my favorite.
If you can afford a house in a development surrounding Lake Norman, that's a nice area...
That area is expensive by U.S. southeast standards, but would be considered very affordable compared to CA.
The answer below mine is technically correct, as far as it goes, but the communities I mentioned have been very active in combatting urban sprawl, and they've changed their ordinances to require quality development. Especially Huntersville.
