That is pretty nasty for sure, but don't forget male teachers have done the same thing. I think the media just focuses more on the female teachers that have done this for whatever reason. It is still nasty nonetheless.

I don't think that it is as common as you think it is. Probably male teachers having relations with female students would be more common, but hopefully not all that widespread. The age difference between partners is not frowned upon nearly as much when the man is older. Many times these instances are handled quietly within the school and the offending teacher is fired and goes on to teach somewhere else and repeats his behavior there. I have been teaching 30 years and know of only a few instances of teacher/student relationships. Most were at the high school level, only one at the middle school level, none at elementary level. All but 2 were male teachers with female students.
