When I replaced the battery in a PIR, the Pir still did not work. There is a length of stiff wire in the Pir, is this a tamper device? If so how do I overcome it?

If the PIR is part of a security system, then the stiff wire may be the antenna to communicate with the panel. The tamper switch is usually a small button, sometimes with a spring attached. Check that the battery you are fitting is good, also check that you dont have to reset the panel, if it was giving a 'Low battery' warning.
