Best books for deep knowledge, but not for beginners, is the series by E M Lifshitz and L D Landau, They are now out in paperback and under $50..

The best basic books on physics are the Feynman Lectures on Physics, IMHO. Although it does not focus on nuclear physics, it's the best basic set of physics books out there, covering mechanics, E&M, and quantum mechanics.

Try ABC Physics.... i did Science from CBSE and it really hepled.... and since HSC maharashtra syllabus is some what similar to CBSE (knw bcz i have studied in Maharashtra) it would help... it might be tedious to read it as it explains everything many tyms but if u can sit through it then u r all set to clear ur basics hope it helps :)
