Occasionally, say once a quarter, my laptop screen will just fade to white during my using it. The laptop power will stay on, but the screen will just fade suddenly to white, over say 2-3 seconds.

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-K115B running Windows XP with all security patches installed - what is causing this problem?

That sounds like a hardware problem. The LCD screen is probably going bad. Unlikely that it is a software issue.
