We live in Southern California and my son is sure he wants to be a Pharmacist. I thought it would be a good idea to actually see what they do. He's a Junior so he has some time to check it out.

As a hospital volunteer for many years, I know that there are several programs for teens. These days, I lead several community volunteer projects. One of my 15-year old volunteers also works Saturdays as a volunteer in the pharmacy at one of the large local hospitals.

All hospitals have volunteer programs, either through their Auxillary office, Central Volunteer Office, or Human Resources. You can check with your local hospitals for programs.

You can also check with your local volunteer center:

Volunteer centers specialize in connecting you with the volunteer or community service activity that matches your interests.

You can also check local pharmaceutical companies. In the healthcare field, pharmacists have many other career opportunities than just the retail market. I work with one of the largest employers of PharmD's, and many of the Pharmacists that I work with have different consulting, management, patient safety, and other projects. You might also want to consider some of the internship programs with some of these corporations as well.

Good luck!

Just call your local pharmacys. Walgreens, etc. Even Kaiser or local hospitals. That's what my sister did.

She was over 18 (in college) when she called. That made the paperwork easier. Altho, if it's just volunteer, there may not be a problem. They gave my sister a part time job.

It's a very good idea to see what they actually do. My sister discovered after about 2 weeks that she couldn't stand pharmacy once she started working at one.
