Values are a reflection of the moral state of the society. If a society is stable, values will be stable. And, if it is so, every member of the society will know his place in it. Values are the basis of our way of life - they help us orientate in the world around us and help build up an attitude towards ourselves and that world. But, values are not created to control us, because we form them. They are more of some kind of guidelines. If a man (or, worse, the whole society) looses the main values, and not replace them with some new ones, then life comes into a state of chaos and some aspects of life loose their meaning. To put it simply, values MEAN purpose.

Values are important because they determine your world view and your actions. As a Christian, I am committed to what God wants in my life. I make my choices based on that value. So does everyone else. What you value can be viewed from your actions. For example: If I value honesty, I don't lie, nor do I enter a profession where lying is a value. If you value money over relationships, you might choose a job that gives you money but discourages relationships due to the time necessary to make money. Being a Christian, I would not work in a profession that would lead someone else to sin...because that would affect the integrity of my values.

"Values" means priorities, and they come from culture & socialization as well as from simple self-interest. Values are the basis you use for _every judgment you make_ about what is good and bad, right and wrong; they affect how you see yourself and others, who you make friends with, who & what you fear, who you emulate, what work you think is worthwhile, what things you find rewarding to do and what things you find degrading to do, how you choose to spend your time and how you feel about wasting time. Without values you would not make judgments about anything. You need them to decide good from bad at every level.

Differences in our values are at the root of every political argument, controversy, and misunderstanding.

One value my mother taught me was to treat others how you would like to be treated. I always treat others with respect and dignity ... until they disrepect me, then my attitude changes toward them. She also taught me to forgive but never forget ;) In my job I care for people with intellectual disabilities and how staff treat them determines very much on their ongoing safety health and wellbeing. However, in the past I have seen some staff mentally, verbally and physically abuse these very people we are entrusted to care for. I have taken these staff to the side and discussed with them ... both mentally, verbally and physically ... what I think of their practises and what I will do to ensure it will never happen again. I believe my values and work ethics have been instrumental in helping me to successfully achieve a managment position within my organisation. Now i'm in a position to ensure the integrity of our staff's work practise, to treat our clients with the proper care they deserve across our organisation.

Your values reflect who you are. When you have good values, people will see the good qualities you have. Whether it be in personal or proffesional life. If you reflect good values, you receive good rewards, bad ones well you know.
