Somebody gave me advice one time when I was feeling what you are expressing. At the time, I didn't know what to make of the advice, it seemed incorrect, though with good intentions. That was about seven years ago, and I have to tell you that the advice has proven to be accurate and good.
Here it is: do selfless acts for other people. There are an infinite amount of possibilities! Selfless acts are as varied as people and situations.
Just do nice things for others. Put yourself in the service of other humans. Any of them. It doesn't even matter. Make up your own, though, I don't know you and only you know what you have to offer. A selfless act does not need to be grand, it can be very small, and it will work, I swear.
This is cliche, this is overstated, this is simple. The payback feels great, though, really. And you have absolutely nothing to lose. Please try it, I think you will find the meaning you are looking for.
You can't find inner peace by looking outside of yourself. If you take your good intentions (from inside) and put them into effect in the world, you will create real (not meaningless) joy. This is a promise.
Peace!

We have all been there. Just keep yearning to find the real meaning of life or even inwardly seeking help and and guidance from your own inner true self. It will come in a very clear way. Then you will draw to you someone, something or maybe a book or the like that will point you in the right direction. For me I came across this marvelous book many years ago which clearly laid out a way for me to initially overcome fears, anxieties and negativities. That resulted in my becoming very transformed and having a completely different positive outlook on life. I started seeking more and I was drawn to others also seeking a purpose and meaning in life Eventually I learned about yoga and meditation and was drawn to a wonderful, profound, and highly respected, Indian meditation and yoga teacher. He taught me the path of meditation and that opened up a whole new world for me. Through meditation you become still and centered and then truths, insights and knowledge bubble up from within yourself Gives you wonderful poise, peace and a marvelous new energy and you know exactly what your true role and true purpose in life and that is enabling others to find the same truth. Only then can you have poise and peace and live a contented life.

The only true advice I can offer is that the deep inner peace that you are searching for is just that....Inside yourself. It isnt something you can find in the outside world. It can only come from within. All too often we look toward worldy things to bring us the happiness and joy that life has to offer. When in truth life itself is the greatest gift we have. Creating a difference in anothers life can be a simple as a smile on the street to a complete stranger. You may be the only one on that day to make that person smile. You dont have to find a solution to world peace to make a difference in someones life....Just be yourself, and love yourself. The rest will follow.

First of all you are on the right track, being an engineering student will give you an opportunity to do much creative necessary work. Many persons, myself included, do not have the ability to do such specialized, badly needed professional work.
As a minister let me stress materialism is not of itself bad. Jesus said in John l0:10 I came that they have life and have it more abudantly. Jesus rebuked the disciples, who had criticized a woman for pouring expensive perfume on him. They said the perfume could have sold and money given to the poor, but Christ saw he would not always be with them.
Listening to classical music has been shown by scientific studies to actually increase order of the mind. That may seem strange, but studies support this. As a preacher I see scientific things as proof of a great creator. Musing on them seems highly useful to me.
As far as finding your purpose in life, I believe it is better gained by God, than our wishes. He will lead to what worthwhile actitivites you can do. Rick Warren's "Purpose Driven Life" better states this than I can. I do believe accepting Jesus Christ died for our sins, most basically John 3:16, will lead you toward that inner peace. St. Augustine, a brilliant writer and man, before being saved said "my heart was restless until it found peace in Thee." If you ask Jesus to come into your life he will give you direction that cannot come better from anywhere.

Read the book Ecclesiastes
The work emphatically proclaims all the actions of man to be inherently "futile" and/or "meaningless," as the lives of both wise and foolish men end in death. While the teacher clearly promotes wisdom for the enjoyment of an earthly life, he is unable to ascribe eternal meaning to it. In light of this perceived senselessness, the teacher suggests that one should enjoy the simple pleasures of daily life, such as eating, drinking, and taking enjoyment in one's wife and work, which are gifts from the hand of God.

You are RIGHT to feel restless!! This is called spiritual awakening within yourself. Your spirit senses the real emptiness in this material world!! Your heart questions the PURPOSE OF LIFE on this earth. Being 18 years old--it is time to ask WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF MY LIFE HERE ON EARTH?? It is good to ask because this will shape your existence here on earth towards more specific aims and mission in life. LIfe is NOT always FUN and PARTIES,FRIENDS AND BOOZE!!! THIS WORLD DOES NOT EVOLVED AROUND YOU ALONE!! There are millions of young people out there less fortunate than you, who do not have the same opportunities as you have,These are the people we should reach out and help. To be compassionate, unselfish, less self-center,less egoistic, less hot-tempered, more giving than taking. BE A BETTER PERSON. When I was 18 years old, more than 40 years ago--I volunteered my service to a handicapped home to help those retarded children. It really helped me to see myself--by helping others--I became less self absorbed in myself and more involved in the lives of others. Life is no longer boring amd meaningless!!! I hope you will discover the PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE in your life!! Best of luck!!!

I don't know how to help you nor what you should do...
let me just share with you an experience..
i had for years this moment, when thoughts of dying and/or not being born bombared me. Sometimes it makes me just yell in the middle of the night....because I am out of answers to those 2 dilemmas. So, finally, I just have to face the fact that I will die sooner or later. And just get busy with what time I had left. Its hard but you'll get used to it.
Try to accept the facts and have peace with yourself.

pick a night, and just cut loose. you sound to me to be a little to tense. you just need a night where you dont worry about a single thing. go to a bar and just have a great time. of course, do it within the parameters of the legal system.
