Normal ones amplify the sound by the hollow belly made of wood thats why they have a hole in them. Electric guitars have pickups which pickup the sound from the string and convert it into a signal which goes to an amplifier.

The differences between electric guitars tend to involve the hardware and the electronics (and the wood they're made from . Single coil pickups are great for a vintage sound, but 'humbucking' pickups are louder and less prone to hum (hence the name); guitars without tremolos such as the Telecaster stay in tune for longer than guitars with tremolos, such as the Stratocaster; heavy metal guitars often feature 'locking trems' that enable you to bend strings down several notes and spring back up again, and so on. As with acoustics, you can also get 12-string models - and again, they're great if you want a jangly guitar sound but expect to pay a lot more than for a standard six-string. Twelve-string electric guitars are also very, very heavy.

there is no such thing as a "normal" guitar, some people refer to an acoustic as a "normal" guitar.
