Well as the only "evidence" we have for Atlantis is the description written by Plato in 355 BCE in "Timaeus", then we should really look to him for how it was lost.
According to Plato there was a cataclysm : huge earthquakes, waves rolling across the land, and the whole island sinking beneath the waves in a single night.
As to whether Atlantis itself was real or not, unlikely in the way Plato describes (he says it was west of the Pillars of Hercules and therefore in the Atlantic), but it may have been based on the stories that had come down to his day regarding the destruction of the Minoan civilisation when Santorini erupted.

Science continues to discover evidence of sunken land masses like Doggerland and Zealandia. Both are real and were inhabited. If we consider that these civilizations were many on the face of the Earth prior to an encompassing catastrophe, then there were many of which could be Atlantis or similar. The question then should be where did the water come from? One sees the coastlines reflecting how were formed by existing oceans. If the coastlines are exposed, then the water is locked up in ice. If the coastlines are drowned, then the ice has melted substantially. I wonder why our coastlines are drowned and the ice is minimal? It follows that if the coastlines were exposed, then civilization would have far less land available for living. But that is not what we have. So, another explanation is called for.
Has our Earth expelled matter onto the ocean floor from the core leaving a partially hollow core ---which scientist say exists---and expanding the Earth?
And raising the level of the oceans at the same time?

atlantis civilization as you say may not have existed as it was found in only plato's works but many theories have cropped up saying that it existed and may have been destroyed by several factors. experts are saying it was probably because of a volcanic eruption which led to a huge tsunamigenic wave which may have crashed upon the civilization thus killing all the people there. it may also have been due to wars or some so called supernatural behaviours. experts also say that it may be due to meteorite striking.

According to Homer Atlantis was a great civilisation that existed 9,000 years before ancient Greece. It was the most powerful kingdom in the world at that time. However, the Atlantians angered the gods so the gods destroyed it through volcanic eruptions.

you know, the flag of atlantis has a horse.....coz their god was posiedon.....lord of the horses.....the philosopher plato wrote about this great island in detail....the legend was that the entire island was destroyed overnight....also, atlantians had the power to travel thru sky....coz the grandfather of posiedon was oranos who was lord of the skyies.....
now In india, the aswins.....(aswin=horse), the ramayana mentions a great war took place between rama, and the ashwins...and that the complete island was destroyed in a single day....
and also that the aswins could travel in the air......(thru a spaceship kind of a thing which looks like indian temples)...
Scientists gave many explanations like flood, volcanic eruption and lot others.....and they also said that plato just wrote about this island out of his imagination....
well plato wrote a very clear description of it though, even the city plans....
it could be reality or a myth

According to the legend, the island sank beneath the sea. There's no evidence for any Atlantean civilisation in real life.

I think Atlantis civilization was a myth. But there actually was an island that was thought to be Atlantis. I don't think there were people on it though.

Though there is some speculation that it may
have existed, we don't know where, exactly when
or how it ceased.
It may be like most myths ... have some basis
in fact, but mostly be the result of the inaccuracies
of telling and re-telling and re-telling...
