That's a hard one, they were separated and he tried the grass on the other side, if he didn't like it and now is back then maybe he's learned how good he's had it with your mom all these years. BUt it's gotta hurt your mom, just support her whichever way she goes and yes people do forgive, not always but it definitely isn't a rare occurence.

I have cheated and have been cheated on. I find that there will always be a repeat. Being faithful is not something you learn. Perhaps I am mistaken, but once a cheater always a cheater. You did say that they where seperated....now some could say that in that case that is not an affair
