in comic books,tv shows, movies there is always the character who has a sword well here is my question.
when a character has a sword and hits the person with invulnerability why does the sword shatter!?
i mean in order for it to shatter wouldnt the person (usually with no powers) hafto have the strength necessary to shatter it himself?!?

end of nerd moment XD!!

If you or I took a sword and slammed into a brick wall with all our strength, the sword might shatter. That's basically what's going on here. The person weilding the sword doesn't need any superpowers to make that happen; they just need to be hitting an object (or a force field) that won't give when they hit it. Now most of the time in real life the sword wouldn't shatter unless it was a cheap/brittle sword. It would only bend or get scraped up. But I guess for dramatic effect the comics/movies are using artistic license, like the way in which all cars that have an accident explode on TV.

Because the invulnerablity usually involves either a tough hide or an energy field,(Superman's is an energy field, I believe) and either one might shatter a sword.

if the sword shatters they can switch to a pneumonium P-36 space modulator. and everyone knows that if you have no super powers you shouldn't fight invincible beings. duh. Now let me know if I can borrow your 58 sided dice, I have to face a level 83 Gorgon elf later today in my mom's basement. Then I have to watch three re-runs of Star Trek.

Maybe the person has super shattering power! This can't overcome invulnerability though, so he's hosed.

It's a combination of "anime/movie/comics physics" and "willful suspension of disbelief."
In other words, it happens because it looks cool, and you really shouldn't worry about little things like laws of nature in these cases. ^_^

Maybe it's metaphoric....the person is of good character, so no evil can harm them .....end of my nerd moment!
