I was one of a very lucky few who knew back in the late '80s/early 90s the Internet was coming.

You all use it every day.

Do you know what it was originally called?

I'll award the 10 points to the one who can not only answer that, but also answer WHY it all started.

This is going to be a tough decision to award BA.

A few of you are right on the money. I'm favoring those who pulled the answer from prior knowledge.

No offense to those who took the time to research. I was not afforded the luxury when I learned it was on the way. There was no Internet to research the history of the Internet!!

I was a computer course developer back then and created a course to introduce field personnel to the basic concepts. Too bad I can't remember the concepts now.

1973 was when the protocol later to be called TCP/IP was under deveolpment. The "Internet" had it's roots much earlier.

darpanet. The department of defense wanted someone to invent a communications system that would still function if parts of it were destroyed. The solution was to create something that was like a net, you can cut a few strings of a net, the net will still function. This was darpanet, which evolved into the internet. It works, this was proven during the gulf war, the bombers disabled Iraq's telephone system, but the Iraqis could still communicate using the internet.

In 1973, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) initiated a research program to investigate techniques and technologies for interlinking packet networks of various kinds. The objective was to develop communication protocols which would allow networked computers to communicate transparently across multiple, linked packet networks. This was called the Internetting project and the system of networks which emerged from the research was known as the "Internet." The system of protocols which was developed over the course of this research effort became known as the TCP/IP Protocol Suite, after the two initial protocols developed: Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and Internet Protocol (IP).

The Internet was originally designed as a communication tool between users of a few mainframe

computers located inside some Universities and Government offices. To access this early Internet, you had to use a terminal that was inside these secure locations and attached by cable to one of the mainframe computers involved. The outside world could not get access to this early Internet system. Because the original Internet was limited to a very secure environment, no security measures were designed into the Internet. Later, as the scope of the Internet was broaden and became available to almost anyone around the world, additional security features were not added to the Internet. The Internet was initially designed without security and security was never added to the Internet as it grew.

I got my first computer as a hand-me-down from my aunt when I was 10. The year was 1988. It did not come with Internet but was a database of Word version 4.2. I agree with the third guy's answer as to the original name of the Internet.

It all started because Pete went on holiday and Mike needed to contact him since he'd forgotten how much food to give the cat.

CERN might have something to say about all these ARPAnet answers...
