Expect between 5 to 7 days. It will take a while to become regular. You can expect some occasional spotting from time to time. (Start keeping your own private record, after a while you will be able to determine your own schedule and know what to expect. Also, from now on, whenever you go to the doctor, they will want to know the first day of your last period.--Might as well get used to keeping up with it.)

3-7 days is the normal time frame. It's different for all women. I knew a girl who was 15 and hers lasted 3 days, whereas when I first started out they were 7, almost 8 days long.
It's normal for it to be a little brown when it first comes out. Some people get this, and with others it's pink/red. You can get days when it seems like it's stopped...it really isn't. You're just on a light flow day. Usually at night, since you're not active and you're laying down most of the time it won't really come out. However if you are on a day with a heavy flow then it is possible for it to come out at night. They have pads that are longer in length for night use in case this does happen.
As you get older you can start to wear tampons. They actually shorten your cycle. I mentioned before mine were 7-8 days...using tampons they were only 5, and because it's inside of you soaking everything up, it seems to shorten it and also take away some of the pain. I know it did that with me. You can start using tampons whenever you want, Playtex has slimfit ones for young teens, and really you can use whatever size you want. It's just that your canal widens over time from use of tampons, so starting with slimfits will prepare you. But they should only be worn for no more than 4 hours, on the package it says 8. I've actually gone a lot longer, because I simply forgot about it, but this can lead to TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome) in some women, so be careful. Pads should also be changed every couple hours...I think it's 2-3.
And I think I understand why you would put this up here instead of asking your mom or another adult. It's embarassing at first, and still to this day I do not talk about it, even with my close friends. It's just one of those subjects.
You can't always count on genetics. My mom's are sparatic and mine are not. I have much shorter and lighter cycles than her. Just because someone is related to you doesn't mean they have the same internal clock ticking at the same time with yours.
Take Care :-)

Unless you're the type to have heavy flow, you'll see a little bit on there from the night before...if you can stand them, try tampons; they'll catch whatever flow before it comes out and makes a mess (I've been through this before when I was young--man, it was embarrassing to me!)
For me, it started getting less and less, plus, if you're wearing tampons, as you slack up, it gets harder to insert them in. But if this is your first, then more than likely you'll be nervous about actually sticking something there, I know I was! Like someone has already said, 5-7 days is the norm, and not all women are the same with their flow, either. Most girls also take after their moms as well; my mom was irregular, and so was I, so I took pills to get things on track.
It can be embarrassing at times, so anytime you think you may be close next month, keep some extra pads/tampons on hand, 'cause who wants a GUY pointing that out? Oh, and one more thing, if you use tampons, please don't get the ones with cardboard applicators, now those things are very uncomfortable to put in!

Usually when you get your first period, you won't get "normal" for a few months. Generally, the first ones are not as long but then you'll get to the 3 to 5 days and then even out. My 1st one was only 1 day, and then after a month or two they got to the normal pattern. All women are different. My advice, get a small date book or calendar and mark on it when you start and when you end, this way, until you really get used to it, you'll be able to keep track and get on a schedule sooner. Also, when you think you are done, its a good idea to wear a panty liner for another day, just to be sure.

Don't worry about these people that took the time to write you just to tell you to ask your mother. They still took the time to write you, consider yourself on their agenda..lol. But to answer you, everyone is different, only you can start to tell after the first few. Always carry an extra pad with you at all times. You never know when you will start(because you're not used to it yet). I was regular at first and then it just disappeared for a while(like 4 months) then it just started again. So who knows. Wear liners, they are always a good idea. After a few months you'll get the gist of it.

Honestly? I have read more gross period questions on here with graphic descriptions of discharge. Do people forget this is the internet and a public forum? Can't you discreetly ask your mother?

You wont until it's done just keep track of it from now on. So you can know the time of month you start and about how long it will last.
