It really depends on what gauge you like to play, and what kind of sound you're going for.

Just as an example, D'Addario, Ernie Ball and Martin are all brands with a good reputation, although my best advice would be to try a company like stringsdirect.co.uk where you can read a bit about each make of string, on it's own page. I would also recommend this company to buy from, they've always been very good to us. The makers websites usually have pages showing the artists that use whichever string. If one of those artists has a sound you like, you could consider trying that one?

My other half and I are professional musicians, and have just restrung some of our guitars. Just FYI, the latest strings we've tried have been Ernie Ball's Acoustic Hybrid Slinky strung on a vintage Vanguard acoustic - the Other Half prefers a narrow top end and a fatter bass string - and we like them. The phosphor bronze strings produce a really nice warm, mellow sound, more friendly-sounding than the nickel ones that we had on before.

You'll probably have to try several brands before you know what you like - they'll all sound different on different guitars too! Just have a good listen whenever you get some new strings, and ask yourself what it is about the tone that you like or dislike. Everyone has their own preference!

All the best.

I prefer "coated" acoustic guitar strings.....they keep their bright sound much longer than non-coated strings. They are more expensive, but you have to change them much less frequently than non-coated strings.
I've tried the Elixer Nanoweb & Polyweb coated strings, and they sound GREAT, but the coating actually starts peeling off, so I don't use them regularly.
My favorite choice is the D'Addario EXP coated strings....they feel and look just like regular strings, but sound brighter for a longer time, and outlast regular strings.

You can find a huge selection of strings at: www.musiciansfriend.com
