It's very easy to tell what a baby's position would be at 35 weeks - any competent doctor or midwife would be able to feel whether a baby is head down. The only exception to this may be if the patient was seriously overweight - this actually happened to us once - we had a women present at the triage area complaining of pain in her ribcage and saying she was almost full term - it took three midwives to try and locate the baby manually and even after we called the duty OB she was scratching her head - we had to resort to a mobile ultrasound machine and even using that it was hard to see. I am guessing this woman must have weighed 450 pounds plus, she was unable to walk.

yea the doctor can tell without an ultrasound i went last week and my midwife said that she could feel the head by touching the bottom part of my stomach and could tell he was facing to the back. its kinda odd tho but its also nice to know he is in a good position for birth.

The Dr. can sometimes tell by doing an external exam. They feel your abdomen and feel for the position of body parts.
