A sewing machine would definitely be useful but you can make a dress by hand if necessary, it will take longer of course. First measure yourself as if you were buying a dress, or if you know your size already, that's great. Then go to a fabric store and look at patterns, usually the people who work there are very helpful so ask for advice. You will need a pattern, fabric and thread, plus a zipper if necessary and possibly some trim. Fabric stores sometimes also offer classes, you could check that out as well.

Then when you get home, find a big open area, a large table or a bare floor that's clean and uncarpeted, to spread out your pattern. First you cut out your pattern, it will be printed on tissue paper and you need to cut it out very carefully. Then pin it to your fabric and cut out around the pattern pieces. Follow the directions in the pattern to sew your dress.

If you are doing it by hand, it can be done, but it takes patience and make sure you keep your stitches small and even. If there is someone to help you who sews, that would be great, your mom or grandma.

Good luck!

First, you need a mannequin. Then, you gotta get a book. Next, decide on a dress design. Blue print it, make it unique and original. Then you are going to need lots of thread and definately a sewing machine if you don't have one. So, it will take time, be patient. Another alternative: go to a boutique and have it made custom to your design. Good Luck :)

If you buy a dress pattern, the instructions will tell you what sort of fabric you need.
