A friend of mine recently married -- she is no spring chicken and felt she'd look silly in a traditional wedding dress, so she went looking in the mother of the bride section of the wedding dress stores. She ended up with an kind of ecru colored silk "suit" (dress with jacket) with a lot of embroidery and trim -- she looked great. It was full length.

Usually, if someone doesn't want to wear a wedding gown they will buy a nice, elegant, dress. If they don't want that they may buy a very nice, elegant, suit.

If the person doesn't want any of those traditional options then I guess pretty much anything goes.

An evening skirt suit is chosen by many as an alternative.
What makes a skirt suit an evening attire are satin/silk fabric, beads, glitter, embroidery, lace or chiffon.

Well, if it's going to be warm, you could go with a nice sun dress...or a pant suit...I've seen people get married on the beach in bathing suits, I like a nice sun dress real flowing and feminine.
